DUNE PART 2 EXPLAINED
“Dune” has long been a deadly siren for filmmakers. The scifi classic proved to be a vexing task of adaptation for filmmakers as legendary as David Lynch and Alejandro Jodorowsky. But in 2021, Denis Villeneuve cracked the code to the legendary text. “Dune Part One” was a critical and commercial success, kickstarting a new instantly-beloved franchise.
So it should come as no surprise that hopes were high for the second installment. Few films would be able to live up the expectations “Dune Part Two” was saddled with, but the movie has passed with flying colors. In this video, we look at what went into the “Dune” sequel.
DUNE PART TWO CINEMATOGRAPHY
As with its predecessor, “Dune 2” has impressive cinematography. Director of photography Greg Fraser returned for the sequel, but he didn’t simply run back the same plays from “Part 1.” For “Part 2,” Fraser opted to use more spherical lenses than the anamorphics he used repeatedly throughout “Part 1.” He re-housed old lenses, and detuned them to counter the hyper-sharpness of the Alexa sensors he was shooting on.
Fraser primarily used telescopic lenses for “Dune 2,” hoping that their crushed perspective would add to a feeling of suspicion and suspense. Of course, most notably, Fraser and Villeneuve decided to shoot Giedi Prime in infrared. The bold choice created stark imagery that made the planet feel all the more menacing and alien.
MAKING OF DUNE 2 PRODUCTION DESIGN
A huge element of the “Dune Part Two” visual palette is production design. PD Patrice Vermette pulled inspiration from all over the world to make each setting feel unique and real. Vermette built the look of Arrakis in the deserts of Jordan and the UAE. He wanted to forefront nature, since the Fremen’s relationship with the natural world is vital to the story. For Geidi Prime, Vermette pulled from the brutalist architecture movement.
DUNE VISUAL EFFECTS
“Dune 2” relied on a combination of visual and practical effects. The show-stopping scene where Paul Atreides rides a sandworm is testament to the marriage of these two approaches. The scene took almost forty days to shoot, and Vermette created a massive moving platform to simulate the worm. The end result speaks for itself.
“Dune 2” takes what was working in “Dune 1” and improves upon it. The grand storytelling, the epic vistas, the detailed settings- it’s all here. Denis Villeneuve and his team spared no expense and cut no corners. If our expectations were high for “Dune Part 2,” they’re even higher for “Dune Messiah.” Only time will tell if the director can match them.

Is using a computer to add a real thing to the frame VFX or CGI? Like the example where the guy creates multiple versions of himself, if you accomplished the same thing with a computer does that make it CGI? I suppose so but the question popped up because I was thinking it's different from adding something that's entirely made in a computer, like the Pikachu, since you are just using a computer to make the old VFX technique of multiple exposures to create things that aren't actually there easier.

How is forced perspective VFX rather than SFX? Unless I'm misunderstanding forced perspective is using the camera's perspective to fool the audience into thinking things are bigger or smaller or closer or whatever. This is something happening in front of the camera right? I've also heard painted backgrounds called VFX before (maybe this is just wrong or an attempt to simplify), but I would think they are SFX.

I hate the I love you example of subtext because it's too basic. And only applies to romance as a sub genre. It's too narrow. It's like using Godfather as a story arc or character arc example. It's lazy and too basic. It's not instructive enough.

Does anyone else feel like some of these in Chapter 2 are just arbitrary categorizations of 3, or at least not sufficiently justified why it shouldn't be broken down in any other number of categories? Like even with the beginning/middle/end categories, the video also shows a graph that seems to break it down in further subcategories, suggesting there's often more than just 3 parts to a movie.

Structurally, I think Star Wars is a great example. Luke fights Vader 3 times. (Once in his X-wing and 2 duels.) Each time he encounters Vader, he learns something about himself and/or Vader. Each time they meet his view changes, which also changes the context (And, thus, changes the way the audience feels). It also makes Luke's victory EARNED when he defeats Vader in Return of the Jedi (unlike MarySue Rey Palpatine in Disney's "sequels".) By the end of the 3rd encounter, he's learned the lesson that what he wants (revenge) will only turn him into the very evil he's trying to defeat. He realizes that in order to redeem his father and save his own soul, he needs to show Vader mercy. (Pity stayed his hand) Doing so redeems Anakin who in turn sacrifices himself to defeat the Emperor and save his son.) That's powerful storytelling right there. That's why Lucas is a brilliant storyteller. And that's how he was able to create one of the most impactful trilogies in cinema history.
